Zhejiang University of Technology (ZJUT) is the first university jointly established by provincial and ministerial authorities in the eastern coastal region of China, a leading university in the first batch of the national “Institutions of Higher Learning Innovation Ability Enhancement” (2011 Plan) collaborative innovation centers, and one of the first key and high-level university in Zhejiang Province. It is located in Hangzhou, a renowned historical and cultural city as well as a scenic tourist destination in China. ZJUT was founded in 1953, with its origins dating back to the Zhejiang Intermediate School of Technology established in 1910. Over the years, it has developed through several stages, including Hangzhou Chemical Engineering School, Zhejiang Chemical College, Zhejiang University of Chemical Engineering College, and Zhejiang Engineering College, eventually being renamed Zhejiang University of Technology in 1993.
During General Secretary Xi Jinping’s tenure in Zhejiang, he directed the University to “actively leverage its disciplinary advantages and intellectual talents to strive to become a training base for various types of outstanding talents and a research and development base for engineering science and technology, thus making new and greater contributions to accelerating the comprehensive construction of a well-off society in Zhejiang and achieving modernization ahead of schedule.”
The University consists of 3 campuses: Zhaohui, Pingfeng, and Moganshan campus, with a total area of 2,227 acres. It includes 27 colleges and 1 department, in addition to an independent college—Zhijiang College. Currently, there are 21,880 full-time undergraduate students, 16,638 students in various graduate programs, and 1,382 international students. The university employs 3,387 staff members, including 2,412 full-time faculty. It has 83 national-level talents, including 6 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), and 129 provincial and ministerial-level talents.
The University is committed to the fundamental task of strengthening moral education and cultivating talents, focusing on the cultivation of top innovative talents as a guide, engineering and technology talents as the main body, and interdisciplinary talents as a characteristic. It vigorously fosters industry elites and leading talents who are well-rounded, possess a sense of patriotism, international perspective, innovative spirit, and practical ability. Since its establishment, the University has fostered and delivered over 350,000 outstanding talents to the nation. There are currently 64 undergraduate programs, with 46 selected as national-level first-class undergraduate programs, and 21 programs certified by China Engineering Education Accreditation Association. It has established a national-level Innovation and Entrepreneurship College and a national innovation and entrepreneurship base for practical education, ranking 19th among national universities in student competition achievements. The University offers 13 doctoral degree programs in first-level disciplines, 2 categories of doctoral professional degrees, 30 master’s degree programs in first-level disciplines, 3 master’s degree programs in secondary disciplines not covered by first-level disciplines, 22 categories of master’s professional degrees, and has established 13 postdoctoral research stations. The subject areas cover 12 categories, including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management, arts, and interdisciplinary studies. It has 1 “Pinnacle Discipline”, 5 “Advantageous and Featured Disciplines”, and 9 “First-Class Disciplines” recognized at the provincial level. Nine disciplines, including Chemistry, Engineering, Material Science, Environmental Science and Ecology, Agricultural Science, Biology and Biochemistry, Computer Science, Pharmacology and Toxicology, and General Social Sciences, rank in the top 1% globally in ESI, with Chemistry and Engineering in the top 0.1%.
The University adheres to organized scientific research, guided by the needs of major national strategies and regional development, focusing on building an innovation chain from basic research and technology development to engineering applications and result transformation. ZJUT led or participated in key national research and development projects for eight consecutive years (a total of 17 initiatives), and in recent years has published 5 papers in prestigious journals such as Science, Nature, and Cell as the first or corresponding unit. The University ranks 30th in national university science and technology innovation rankings, 187th globally and 56th among mainland universities in the Nature Index, and has been ranked among the top 400 globally in the Shanghai Ranking’s Academic Ranking of World Universities. Currently, there are 10 national-level research platforms and 75 provincial and ministerial-level research platforms. The University has received 26 national science and technology awards, including a first-class National Science and Technology Progress Award, and over 900 provincial and ministerial-level research achievement awards, as well as 17 Outstanding Achievement Awards in Humanities and Social Sciences Research from the Ministry of Education. Since the 13th Five-Year Plan, the University has signed 58 major horizontal projects with contracts exceeding 10 million Yuan. In 2023, the University received 1.202 billion Yuan in research funding. It has established comprehensive partnerships or technology cooperation relationships with local governments, leading enterprises, and top universities in and outside the province, creating 26 local entity research institutes, 47 technology transfer centers, and 356 university-enterprise joint research and development centers, cumulatively serving over 6,600 enterprises and institutions, ranking 9th among Chinese universities for patent transfer.
ZJUT adheres to an open strategy to develop univerity, actively expanding its global partnerships, and has established cooperative relationships with over 180 overseas universities from 35 countries, including 22 of the world’s top 100 universities, such as University College London, University of California, San Diego, University of Queensland, and KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden, gradually enhancing its international reputation and global influence.
